Cats

Here I want to share some pictures and stories of cats I have worked with at my local rescue. I’m very passionate about kitties, and want to promote education on these special creatures! If you are interested in learning more about Kitty City, please visit their website and facebook page!

Cats 101

Do’s

  • For cautious and less extroverted cats, move slowly and gently close your eyes to signal vulnerability to them.
  • Pay attention to their body language. Learn to recognize their ears and tail communication.
  • Get toys and play with your cat! They need this stimulating activity
  • Try giving treats or food right after playtime. This satisfies their instincts of hunting and eating their prey in the wild.
  • Remember all cats are different. Some want to be held, some love to talk, some want to sit on your lap, etc. Just because you can pick up one cat doesn’t mean you should to another if he clearly doesn’t like it!

Don’t

  • Do NOT declaw your kitty. This is equivalent to cutting off your fingers up to your first knuckle.
  • Don’t force interactions with an apprehensive cat
  • If a cat is hissing and growling, it is DEFINITELY not a good time to pet them. They’ve really gotten upset from having their boundaries crossed
  • Don’t overstimulate a cat with petting if they are letting you know to stop

Cats can be truly amazing and loyal pets when you understand and learn how to communicate with them. Just like people, some cats need time to warm up and trust you.
